Biden and his Administration have taken heavy fire, not just from the GOP, but from their own side of the aisle in the advent of Biden’s courageously stupid decision to wait out the end of the eviction moratorium before asking Congress to pass an extension.
The moratorium, which ended on July 31st and saw protesters nailing a symbolic eviction notice to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s front door in defiance, protects renters from being evicted by their landlords if they don’t pay their rent.
Among the litany of critics were the U.S. Representative from Missouri, Cori Bush, who tweeted out later yesterday that “I just had a conversation with @VP Kamala Harris. I needed her to look me in my eyes and I wanted to look in hers when I asked for help to prevent our people from being evicted. Madam Vice President, let’s work together to get this done. We need a federal eviction moratorium.”
In fact, Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, who is also the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus had especially venomous words for the Biden Administration saying that, ““It’s too little too late. The White House did not handle this well. I think they did not think about this eviction moratorium in a serious way.”.
California Democrat Ro Khanna, erupted in tantrum, billowing that Since the president’s term [started], I haven’t seen this much frustration — anger — in the progressive caucus. It makes absolutely no sense from a public health perspective.”.
Even the Democratic darling of the media, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez in conversation with CNN’s Jake Tapper, showed a heretofore unseen dawning political awareness by saying that, “I think there’s a couple of issues here. First of all, you are absolutely correct in that the House and House leadership had the opportunity to vote to extend the moratorium, and there were many, and there was, frankly, a handful of conservative Democrats in the House that threatened to get on planes rather than hold this vote,”. She then closed by saying that “…we have to really just call a spade a spade. We cannot in good faith blame the Republican Party when House Democrats have a majority,”.
President Biden has done something rather extraordinary in alienating fellow party members and perhaps this is political deformity on Biden’s part that will mount and incur heavy debts and fraction within the Democratic Party, helping to ensure a majority shift for the House in 2022.
