On Wednesday this week, the Democratic North Carolina state Rep. Tricia Cotham publicly left the Democratic party as she decided to join the GOP.
During a press briefing. Cotham clarified her decision to switch parties and stated that the Democratic Party “has become unrecognizable” and urges to “villainize anyone who has free thoughts.”
She stated:
“If you don’t do exactly what the Democrats want you to do, they will try to bully you, they will try to cast you aside. It became clear to me very early on in January that you better vote in line with what Gov. Cooper wants you to do.”
Cotham stated that she thinks that being a lawmaker, it is her duty to “learn everything I can, to ask questions, to hear perspectives before deciding how to vote.” However, Democrats are fearful of such members who think independently, as “they don’t like what they can’t control.”
She declared:
“I will not be controlled by anyone.”
Cotham also informed that the Democrats from North Carolina are executing a liberal echo chamber as well as she blamed her party for bullying and pressurizing those members who aim to leave the Democratic party.
She got her final stroke when she was grilled over using the “praying hands” emoji along with the American flag on social media.
She also claimed that her Democratic rivals used to bother her publicly and even sent texts to her children.
Cothom’s party shift is pretty meaningful for North Carolina as it will empower the GOP to a supermajority in the North Carolina House Legislature.
