“The Hidden Tax,” Paul’s 18-page report, evaluates how prices for essential needs have grown in the last year, citing publicly available price index research. According to Gallup surveys, households earning $40,000 or less are the worst burdened by growing expenses, while households earning $100,000 or more are least affected. According to the report, although larger companies have been able to respond to changing conditions, small businesses with minimal margins have been particularly severely hit. “Sustained inflation is more likely to kill struggling small businesses than it is to kill huge organizations rooted in economies of scale,” Paul stated according to Fox News.
Regarding the root of rising prices on everything from fuel to food, Paul faults Congress for passing massive spending measures in the aftermath of the pandemic. “$4.9 trillion in COVID-19 stimulus spending has generated in one of the highest and longest-lasting inflation rates in US history,” Paul said in a statement. “Despite the fact that government stimulus spending was meant to bring relief, and low and middle-income households and small business owners were assured that their taxes would not rise as a result of these packages, Americans are now paying a ‘hidden tax’ for these projects.”
As it did during the early phases of the coronavirus epidemic, Congress passed massive relief legislation that was bipartisan in character, boosting unemployment benefits, aiding small businesses, and distributing direct stimulus checks. The $1.8 trillion CARES Act was passed by Congress in March 2020, followed by a $900 billion follow-up relief package in December under the Trump administration. Democrats headed by Vice President Biden passed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan last year.
Paul has been a vocal opponent of congressional spending, blaming the outpouring of funds on growing expenses. “While Congress was able to unify in 2020 to spend $4.9 trillion,” Paul said in his paper, “unity does not always result in virtuous outcomes, and this specific example of unity left Americans in the worst economic conditions in recent history.” “This is a scenario we devised.”
