The progressive lawmakers are worried and concerned as the Biden administration considers whether it should reinstate the Trump-era rule of detaining immigrant families in order to curb the growing border crisis.

Following Tuesday’s reports by several media outlets regarding President Biden’s upcoming tough measures to control the rising influx of migrants and reinstatement of Title 42, members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), issued a shared statement asking Biden to not go through with family detention.

The progressives stated:

“We are deeply concerned by reports that the Biden Administration is considering reinstating family detention in an attempt to deter migration. We agree with Secretary Mayorkas when he said, ‘A detention center is not where a family belongs.’”

They added:

“We should not return to the failed policies of the past. There is no safe or humane way to detain families and children, and such detention does not serve as a deterrent to migration. We strongly urge the administration to reject this wrongheaded approach.”

Title 42 was implemented by the Trump administration to stop illegal aliens from entering the United States via the southern border and it will expire in May.

Several media outlets, including the New York Times, reported that President Biden has been holding meetings with his administration to devise strict policies to control the massive surge of illegal migrants.

While talking with Fox News Digital this Tuesday, a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security revealed:

“No decisions have been made as we prepare for the Title 42 Public Health Order to lift. The Administration will continue to prioritize safe, orderly, and humane processing of migrants.”
