A district supervisor from San Francisco is requesting more police patrolling in a city full of crimes after supporting the defunding of the police in 2020.

The Democratic politician, Hillary Ronen, who is a representative of District 9 working on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, on Wednesday, amidst a Budget and Appropriations Committee conference made an emotional appeal to hiring more officers for the Mission District, which is currently being represented by her.

Ronen was grilling San Francisco’s police chief for consuming a lot of overtime on an anti-retail theft program instead of increasing police in her district.

Ronen stated:

“I’ve been begging this department to give the Mission what it deserves in terms of police presence all year long. And I have been told time and time and time and time again there are no officers that we can send to Mission.”

She added:

“It hurts. And I feel betrayed by the department. I feel betrayed by the mayor. I feel betrayed by the priorities of the city.”

Her address directly contradicts her perspective on policing in 2020. During the George Floyd protests, she expressed in a tweet that she believed “strongly” that the police force of San Fransisco should be shrunk down.

Ronen wrote:

“I want to make it clear that I believe strongly in defunding the police and reducing the number of officers on our force. For decades we’ve had an imbalance in our city’s budget, with hundreds of millions of dollars going to SFPD to have them do work they are not qualified to do.”
