Democrat Rep. from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, responded to a Texas judge’s verdict against abortion pills by suggesting that President Joe Biden should disregard the decision entirely.
Judge Matthew Kacsmarek issued a verdict that the FDA improperly approved mifepristone, an abortion pill, more than twenty years ago.
On Friday last week, Ocasio-Cortez made the remarks about the ruling during a lengthy interview with Anderson Cooper on his CNN show.
Ocasio-Cortez argued:
“Some of these rulings, I think we’ve been preparing and anticipating for their being these egregious overreaches, by members of the judiciary, appointed by a right-wing Republican party, uh, whose goal for a very long time was just to pack these courts with partisan judges, often, under-qualified, or completely unqualified for their role.”
She continued:
“And so, there has been thought, I believe, given to this, Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has already issued statements, uh, for example, advising what we should do in a situation like this, which I concur.”
She claimed:
“Which is, I believe, that the Biden administration should ignore uh, this ruling.”
The socialist Democrat Rep. concluded:
“I think that we should, you know, the courts have the legitimacy, and they rely on the legitimacy of their rulings, and what they are currently doing is engaged in an unprecedented and dramatic erosion of the legitimacy of the courts.”
AOC’s statements are even more puzzling given that Kacsmaryk’s ruling gives the government a whole week to file a plea and stem the ban from getting imposed until a higher court decides the issue.
The Democrat Senator of Oregon, Ron Wyden, also had similar thoughts about the Texas judge’s ruling against the sale of abortion pills, mifepristone.
Wyden stated:
“There is no way this decision has a basis in law. It is instead rooted in conservatives’ dangerous and undemocratic takeover of our country’s institutions.”
He added:
“No matter what happens in seven days, I believe the Food and Drug Administration has the authority to ignore this ruling, which is why I’m again calling on President Biden and the FDA to do just that.”
Sen Wyden also proposed that the doctors, pharmacies and FDA should “go about their jobs like nothing has changed and keep mifepristone accessible to women across America.”
