To no surprise, Republicans no longer control the majority of the government, despite losing control of the White House and Congress after 2020, the party is still pushing its agenda ahead of 2022 in order to give voters a peek of its goals. One of them is that only American citizens have the right to vote on state and local matters, as well as to select who will represent them in Congress. According to Just The News, a group of Republican senators lead by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is working on legislation that would prohibit federal taxpayer money from going to cities and states that enable non-citizens to vote in U.S. elections.

Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-South Carolina, intends to introduce a similar bill in the House. “States allowing foreign citizens to vote is ludicrous,” Rubio said. “However, if states and municipalities permit noncitizens to vote in elections, they should not receive government funds from US residents.” “Voting in our country should be largely reserved for American citizens.” Allowing noncitizens or illegal immigrants to vote, even in state or municipal elections, provides foreign nationals with a voice in some of the most important decisions impacting our families, rights, and representation in government, according to Duncan.

According to the media outlet, Rubio’s new bill would prohibit federal funds from going to any state or local government that allows foreign citizens to vote in any federal, state, or local election, and would require all state and local governments to certify that they do not allow foreign citizens to vote when applying for federal funds. The issue of non-citizen voting first arose at the end of the 2018 Georgia governor’s race, when Democrat Stacey Abrams proposed that the “documented and undocumented” voters she hoped would put her in office included the “documented and undocumented,” the latter a liberal proper term for illegal aliens.

The year was 2018. “In the last two years, certain liberal communities have started the process of allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections.” “A 1994 congressionally approved legislation prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal officeholder elections,” Just The News’ John Solomon writes. Aside from a pair of Vermont municipalities that allow non-citizens to vote for mayor, city council, and local school boards, San Francisco, nine Maryland cities, and two Massachusetts towns have approved similar laws, with the latter now awaiting approval from state lawmakers. According to the journal, Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles are also moving through with plans to allow foreign nationals to vote in local elections in the United States.
