When the New York Times publishes a piece attacking you for destroying the Democrat’s agenda, you know you must be doing something right. The New York Times published an opinion piece titled, “What Joe Manchin Cost Us”.

Joe Manchin stood up to Democrat spending amidst record inflation and out-of-control prices on everything from gas to toilet paper when he declined to negotiate further on Biden’s big agenda item, clean energy.

Manchin confirmed with WV MetroNews that he was ready to vote “to empower Medicare to negotiate drug prices and extend funding under the Affordable Care Act.” But, West Virginia Senator said that would be as far as he is willing to go right now.

“I said, “Chuck, it’s wrong, it’s not prudent to do the other items right now,” Manchin said, adding that if inflation comes down, “we can come back the first of September and pass this piece of legislation, if it’s a good piece of legislation.”

Democrats are trying to jam this legislation in before the August Congressional recess but Senator Manchin is holding it up. He would prefer the September 30th timeline so things can be done right in the face of record inflation.

President Biden has made his feelings towards Senator Manchin well-known. He has grown increasingly frustrated with Senator Manchin and Senator Sinema of Arizona for their refusal to blow up the Filibuster which requires a 60-vote majority to push things through the Senate.

As expected, fellow Democrats began attacking their colleague immediately. Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., dubbed Manchin “Mr. Fossil Fuel Industry.”

Senator Tina Smith from Minnesota stated the “world is literally burning up while he joins every single Republican to stop strong action on climate change.”

Senator Heinrich of New Mexico questioned whether or not Manchin should keep his chairman’s position on the Senate Energy Committee. Representative Yarmouth claimed, “We’re all going to die now,” because Congress failed to act.

The media took to their platforms and began releasing information on Manchin’s fundraising efforts. Campaign donations have come in from energy companies, Wall Street financiers, and New England Patriot’s owner Robert Kraft.

They’re trying to paint an image of the conservative West Virginia Senator as beholden to the fossil fuel industry, big wealthy corporations, and rich elite individuals.

Once again, Democrats appear to be out of touch with the current state of affairs in the country. Senator Manchin hails from one of the most conservative states in the nation. His ability to navigate the halls of Congress and remain a moderate Democrat has ensured his re-election in 2012 and 2018.

If Manchin were to lose his seat in the Senate in 2024, Democrats may not be able to replace him with another Democrat for decades. West Virginians, who rely on fossil fuel as their livelihood, will most likely turn to a Republican to take up their cause.

Senator Manchin, if he wanted to, could change his party affiliation and ensure he remains in office for a long-time to come. Either way, the Democrat’s big budget agenda appears stalled for the time being.
