Former White House Chief Of Staff Mark Meadows has filed a lawsuit against Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of the January 6th Select Committee on Wednesday.

The select committee referred Meadows for criminal prosecution for not complying with the contempt proceedings.

Meadows’ legal team is claiming that the committee is demanding records and testimony that are protected by executive privilege.

“The Select Committee acts absent any valid legislative power and threatens to violate longstanding principles of executive privilege and immunity that are of constitutional origin and dimension,” the lawsuit reads.

Along with this charge, Meadows is also challenging the legitimacy of this investigation calling it a “partisan witch hunt” and a show trial with no legislative purpose” as Nancy Pelosi barred Republican Members from this committee which consists of 7 Democrats and only 2 Republicans, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.

According to the lawsuit, the committee has gone too far by issuing subpoenas targeting private citizens, even demanding telephone records, for exercising the First Amendment right to protest with no involvement with the Capitol protest on January 6th, last year.

“The subpoenas issued to Mark Meadows and Verizon were issued by the Select Committee as part of an unconstitutional attempt to usurp the Executive Branch’s authority to enforce the law and to expose what the Select Committee believes to be problematic actions by a political opponent. Congress has no authority to issue subpoenas for these purposes.” The report reads.

“Congress has no freestanding power to issue subpoenas. Instead, its investigative powers are ancillary to its legislative authority… Because of this tie between the investigative and legislative powers, Congress may only issue subpoenas that serve a valid legislative purpose.” Meadows’ attorneys add

Democrats have also attempted to circumvent executive privilege for officials serving under the Trump administration by asking Joe Biden to sign away privileges of President Trump.

In October, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon was charged with contempt. And last week, the committee voted to refer Jeffrey Clark to the Justice Department for criminal contempt. Clark is a former Department Of Justice official who served under President Trump.
