It has been a rough go lately for the embattled mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot. She has suffered a string of hard political defeats and it doesn’t look like it is going to let up anytime soon. Her latest loss has come not from her constituents or her political enemies, but from the CEO of a major company. McDonalds, to be precise. It seems that the Chief Executive Officer had some stern words for the Chicago Democrat.
It was recently reported that:
McDonald’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski issued a warning to Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot four years after the burger giant moved its corporate headquarters to downtown Chicago from a suburb.
He warned Lightfoot that he can’t get executives to move to the city because she basically handed it over to violent criminals and caused a crisis. He said:
“Everywhere I go, I’m confronted by the same question. ‘What’s going on in Chicago?’ There is a general sense out there that our city is in crisis. The truth is, it’s more difficult today for me to convince a McDonald’s executive to relocate to Chicago from one of our other offices than it was just a few years ago.
“It’s more difficult for me to recruit a new employee to McDonald’s to join us in Chicago than it was in the past.”
“We see every single day in our restaurants what’s happening at society at large.
“It’s not going to be something that McDonald’s can solve on its own.
“We need to be able to do it with the public sector as well.”
“That’s one of the things about McDonald’s.
CWB Chicago went on to report that:
Boeing and Caterpillar announced this year that their company HQs are leaving town. And Citadel Securities chief Ken Griffin hauled his company headquarters to Florida after repeatedly complaining about Chicago’s crime problems.
But Kempczinski said his company’s headquarters would be staying in the West Loop, where it moved from Oak Brook four years ago. The city needs to fix some problems, though.
“The burger giant is grappling with violent crime, homelessness and drug overdoses in its Chicago restaurants, and [Kempczinski] called on city and business leaders to find ways to address the problems,” the Journal reported.
Crain’s Chicago Business also reported on his speech:
“The truth is, it’s more difficult today for me to convince (a McDonald’s executive) to relocate to Chicago from one of our other offices than it was just a few years ago. It’s more difficult for me to recruit a new employee to McDonald’s to join us in Chicago than it was in the past.”
Kempczinski said he talks up the positive parts of Chicago—the lakefront, diversity, relatively low cost of living—but “it shouldn’t be this hard.”
There needs to be better collaboration between the public and private sectors, he said. Improving public safety should be the first priority. Kempczinski said he knows the city is focused on the issue, but business leaders don’t know what the city’s plan is.
So, it seems that Lori Lightfoot is being buried under an avalanche of political defeats, and this is only the latest. We have also reported about the vitriol that Lightfoot took after it was revealed that she had been orchestrating the systemic bussing of illegal migrants to a local Chicago suburb without telling the local mayor there. We further reported earlier this month that Lightfoot had a proposal denied by the Chicago Bears that would have allowed them to stay within the city of Chicago. As a note there, if that move actually does happen, it will be a big hit to the city of Chicago. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has an initiative to try and keep the team from leaving. Lightfoot doesn’t seem to have the ability or desire to clean up Chicago. Looks like Chitown is headed back to the way it was in the days of the likes of Capone.
