CPD: Four Undocumented Migrants Robbed and Strangles Victim in Broad Daylight

Four undocumented migrants were arrested after robbing and strangling a passenger on the Pink Line, according to the Chicago Police Department.

These asylum seekers attacked a 48-year-old man in broad daylight while aboard a train near the Kostner station last Saturday.

The crime occurred at around 4:45 pm, police authorities arrived and captured the suspects 45 minutes later at the Pulaski station.

The suspects were Fernando Loyo-Rodriguez, 22, Wilker Gutierrez Sierra, 21, Carlos Carreno-Carreno, 20, and Yonnier Guasamcare Garcia, 18 years old. The four listed their address as 300 block of South Plymouth, a center for migrants in Chicago.

Each of them was charged with robbery and aggravated battery by strangulation.

Before this, Oak Brook City, located 20 miles west of Chicago City, reported a series of retail thefts and burglaries.

According to Oak Brook Chief of Police Brian Strockis, “These retail crimes involving migrant offenders are part of a bigger criminal enterprise and we are working closely with our federal partners to thoroughly investigate these cases.”

Police authorities believe that big-time retail theft syndicates approached migrants and offered them money in exchange for committing thefts and burglaries.

In November last year, arrests of illegal migrants from Venezuela rose to 2,538 percent since the onset of the border crisis. However, in contrast with the 2021 data, arrests skyrocketed to 11,333 percent.

During the same period, at least 686 Venezuelans face jail time in Chicago, compared to 26 in 2022 and six in 2021.

These crimes range from shooting another migrant, robbery, and frustrated homicide to shoplifting.

In June last year, one asylum-seeker attempted to steal $3,100 worth of goods from Macy’s.

Chicago, a sanctuary city, does not cooperate with federal officers investigating crimes committed by illegal immigrants, nor allow local police officers to inquire about a person’s citizenship status.

Since 2022, the Welcoming City has handled 34,000 migrants. In October 2023, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker appealed for help from the federal government as the migrant influx was reaching breaking point.

“Governors and mayors from border states have shipped people to our state like cargo in a dehumanizing attempt to score political points. The people of Illinois are kind and generous. We believe in the fundamental right of every human, especially those facing persecution, to find refuge and live with dignity in this great country of ours,” Pritzker wrote to President Joe Biden.

“But as the numbers being transported to Chicago are accelerating, the humanitarian crisis is overwhelming our ability to provide aid to the refugee population.”

“Unfortunately, the welcome and aid Illinois has been providing to these asylum seekers has not been matched with support by the federal government,” Pritzker added.
