The former House Select Committee led by former Rep. Bennie Thompson and Rep. Liz Cheney deleted at least 117 encrypted files from security footage on the January 6, 2021 demonstration, as discovered by a digital forensics team employed by the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight.
As reported by Fox News, the team found out that the data deletion occurred on January 1, 2023, and was able to recover the password-protected files.
The House Administration Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee on January 6, 2021, led by Chairman Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga), is probing security lapses during the event and the “actions” committed by the former select committee that was supposed to investigate the demonstration.
Unfortunately, the subcommittee has not accessed the deleted files and cannot determine their contents yet.
Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va), a member of the sub-committee, says, “Yes, these reports are accurate. Unfortunately, at this time, we cannot determine what was in the deleted files.”
Another member of the panel, Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC), slammed the now-defunct J6 Select Committee, which was handpicked by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“The Democrat-led J6 Select Committee obviously took great strides to shield certain information from us,” quipped Rep. Murphy.
“The question is: why? What are they trying to hide? Their whole plan was to ‘get the truth of the matter.’ They obviously didn’t want the real truth, just ‘their’ truth.”
Rep. Loudermilk demands the former January 6 panel to turn over passwords so they can access the contents of the deleted files.
According to the chairman of the sub-select committee, Thompson only gave less than 3 terabytes of data, despite his claims of turning over 4 terabytes of digital files.
Loudermilk revealed that “one of the files recovered disclosed the identity of an individual whose testimony was not archived by the Select Committee.”
Other files include “depositions of White House and Department of Homeland Security members that were not archived with the Clerk of the House.”
The panel also demands White House Counsel’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security to submit “unedited and unredacted transcripts” of the depositions.
In a letter to both offices, Loudermilk wrote: “As you acknowledged in your July 7, 2023 letter, the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol (Select Committee) did not archive all Committee records as required by House Rules.”
“You wrote that you sent specific transcribed interviews and depositions to the White House and Department of Homeland Security but did not archive them with the Clerk of the House.”
The chairman expects them to comply by January 24.
On the other hand, investigative reporter Steve Baker exposed an attempt by the Justice Department to suppress journalists probing the January 6 event, where he was threatened to be indicted by the DOJ for his work on The Blaze Media while he was covering the demonstration that occurred in the Capitol.
