Texas has been sending buses of migrants to the sanctuary cities of New York City and Washington D.C.
They said they have become overwhelmed with illegal immigrants, as Texas continues to send buses their way.
According to Axios, thousands of migrants have been sent from Texas, as well as Arizona to the two leftist cities. Both NYC and Washington D.C. have committed to protecting illegal immigrants from deportation with “sanctuary” designations that restrict local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration agencies.
In 2016, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser reaffirmed her city’s sanctuary status, saying “We celebrate our diversity and respect all DC residents no matter their immigration status.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on Friday that Texas has sent over 7,000 migrants to the nation’s capital since April, and at least 900 to New York City since August 5 as a part of Operation Lone Star.
“Before we began busing migrants to New York, it was just Texas and Arizona that bore the brunt of all the chaos and problems that come with it,” Abbott said in a statement this week. “Now, the rest of America can understand exactly what is going on.”
Mayor Bowser said the city has reached a “tipping point” in its effort to help migrants. She called for help from the National Guard for a second time to aid the migrants and provide infrastructure, after previously being denied.
“We need help from our federal partners as we seek to stabilize and manage our operating environment in this critical moment,” she wrote.
“We, likewise, encourage the federal government, as I have expressed to White House officials, to help asylum seekers in ways similar to systems set up for Afghan and Ukrainian refugees,” she said.
And NYC Mayor Eric Adams also requested aid from the federal government, asking for “money, technical assistance and more.”
He also claimed that Abbott “used innocent people as political pawns to manufacture a crisis.”
In January, Adams showed his support for illegal immigrants by allowing a noncitizen voting bill to become law, which permitted more than 800,000 aliens to vote in local elections.
The mayors are citing the bussing as unethical, but according to Valeria Wheeler, the executive director of Mission: Border Hope the migrants want to go on the buses. She said, “No one has been forced.”
According to the official website for Governor Abbott:
Governor Abbott countered New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ baseless claims of Texas’ handling of bused migrants on ABC News’ Nightline. The Governor emphasized that the crisis along America’s southern border is the result of President Biden’s open border policies, which have led to the highest-ever recorded illegal border crossings.
“Frankly, I don’t know of a larger crisis facing our country right now,” said Governor Abbott. “Before we began busing migrants to New York, it was just Texas and Arizona that bore the brunt of all the chaos and problems that come with it. Now, the rest of America can understand exactly what is going on.”
Operation Lone Star has led to more than 296,000 migrant apprehensions and more than 18,700 criminal arrests.
