Americans are all too familiar with the cycle that occurs every time there is a mass shooting in our country.
One side calls for stricter gun laws and the other side points out that criminals don’t obey gun laws.
The Michigan State shooting case has another element that is becoming the norm rather than the exception.
The man who the police labeled as the person responsible for killing three innocent college students and then himself, was arrested on a gun-related charge in Lansing, Michigan in 2019 according to The Detroit Free Press.
Court records of the incident show that a police officer asked the man if he was armed and “upon confirmation that he was,” the officer detained him.
He was carrying a Ruger LCP .380 semi-automatic pistol with a loaded magazine and was charged with “a violation of concealed carry law and possessing a loaded weapon in a vehicle,” a felony.
“The Ingham County District Attorney’s Office, formerly helmed by progressive Democrat Carol Siemon, cut McRae a deal and lowered the charges to a misdemeanor,” according to The Blaze reporting.
Siemon’s successor, Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane, told the Detroit Free Press, “Mr. McRae would have been barred from legally purchasing, owning, or possessing a firearm if he would have been convicted of the [concealed weapons] charge.”
“The misdemeanor conviction did not prevent him from purchasing, owning, or possessing a firearm after he successfully completed his terms of probation,” added Dewane.
Had he been convicted of the original felony charge, the shooter would have faced up to five years in prison.
His sweetheart deal from the progressive DA landed him on probation for 12 months. He never served prison time and was discharged from probation in May of 2021.
What is the conclusion here?
Democrats scream for more gun laws and gun control. Police arrest gun law offenders. Progressive DAs funded by George Soros let the criminals go. Criminals go out and commit more crimes.
People are getting killed in the name of wokeism.
Carol Siemon, the former Ingham County Prosecutor who let the man off with a slap on the wrist, faced calls to resign after she chose to limit when she would pursue felony firearm charges.
According to the Lansing Journal in an article published in August 2021, “Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon announced Tuesday her office would limit the use of felony firearm possession charges as her office implements reforms to decrease racial disparities in the criminal justice system. A felony firearm conviction carries a mandatory two-year prison sentence for a first offense, and the sentence is consecutive to any underlying felony sentence.”
“In a written statement, at-large Lansing City Council Member Carol Wood said Siemon’s policy change does nothing to protect the victims of crimes and their families, especially as the area is seeing an ‘unprecedented’ surge in violence.
“Wood said if Siemon didn’t want to do her job to protect Ingham County, she should resign.”
Siemon did not heed the calls to resign at the time but retired effective December 31, 2022.
In an article announcing the new prosecutor, the author referred to “Siemon’s tenure” as “controversial” and said, “she faced criticisms from some law enforcement officers and judges over some of her criminal justice reform efforts.”
Prosecutors need to go back to holding criminals accountable for their actions. Lives are on the line.
