The 2022 Arizona GOP gubernatorial nominee, Kari Lake, went viral because of a photo from Sunday’s Super Bowl in which she could be seen seated through the entire “Black National Anthem.”
Sunday’s Super Bowl featured the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles competing for the NFL championship.
The photo showed Lake remained still in her seat, instead of standing up when the supposed “black national anthem” was being played.
Since 2020, the playing of the “black national anthem” has been a major part of NFL matches because the league also joined the Black Lives Matter movement.
Journalist Benny Johnson wrote on his Twitter:
“The @NFL played two different ‘National Anthems’ tonight. Someone just sent me a photo of @KariLake sitting during the first one.”
The Western Journal reported:
“The song, a Christian hymn honoring the birthday of Republican President Abraham Lincoln, certainly has noble origins. But the reason for its inclusion before pro football games was anything but noble.”
The report added:
“The ‘black national anthem’ was added as a concession to those who felt the ‘racist’ origins of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ didn’t represent them. Regardless of what song they chose, designating something as a ‘national anthem’ representative of only one racial group is nothing but divisive.”
Lake decided to remain in her seat during the anthem because of the anthem’s “cultural politicization.”
Lake’s Twitter account shared:
“Our girl is against the idea of a ‘black National Anthem’ for the same reason she’s against a ‘white National Anthem.’ She subscribes to the idea of ‘one Nation, under God.’”
