Georgia shooter Colt Gray is not only suffering from a problematic home – his father was abusive, his mother is in jail for several charges, and worse, he suffered from depression.
Classmates would often tease him as ‘gay,’ often leading to physical harassment, his father said in an interview with authorities in 2023.
“I was trying to get him on the golf team. Like, ‘Oh, look, Colt’s gay.’ ‘He’s dating that guy.’ Just ridiculed him day after day after day,” Colin Gray, 54, remarked in a recently published transcript.
“I don’t want him to fight anybody, but they just keep pinching him and touching him, and that’s a whole different deal,” Colt’s father shared.
Aside from these, more details unraveled regarding the Apalachee High School shooting.
Before committing the crime, in an FBI incident report last year, Colt in his Discord account, blatantly said he was planning to commit a ‘mass shooting.’
“I’m committing a mass shooting and I’m waiting a good 2-3 years,” the account wrote.
“I can’t kill myself yet, cause I’m not contributing anything to culture I need to go out knowing I did,” he continued.
Separate posts reveal that the shooter often references Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting suspect, and lamented frequently on the platform about the treatment received by transgenders.
He also posted two firearms with the caption, “I’m ready.”
FBI shared the information with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Still, instead of acting swiftly to prevent any crime and being fully aware that guns were accessible to the Gray household, the investigation was closed, saying, “the user behind the Discord account that made the threat cannot be substantiated.”
On the morning of September 5, Colt fired a series of shots at his school armed with the AR-15 style gifted to him by his father last Christmas.
Because of these, Colt’s father, Colin, is facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children, as well.
According to Georgia’s Bureau of Investigation, Colin faces charges due to “knowingly allowing his son to possess a weapon.”
Under Georgia law, minors are not allowed to possess handguns.
