School shootings should not be a common occurrence in any country let alone the United States of America.
It’s barbaric for someone to walk into a school and kill innocent children and teachers who are just doing their jobs.
But here we are a week after another horrific incident with the same arguments we’ve been having for years.
The Left shouts, “It’s the guns!” The Right counters with, “It’s the person shooting the gun!” and the debate continues and our children are left unprotected once again.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas joined Dana Bash on CNN on Sunday to discuss solutions to prevent school shootings following the mass shooting at Covenant Presbyterian School in Nashville, TN, last week.
The CNN host attempted to frame all House Republicans as unfeeling, pro-gun activists who don’t care about children.
“Are you collectively, House Republicans, telling the American people that mass shootings, including of young children, is that just something that’s going to happen, and you’re not going to make any moves to try to stop it?” she asked Crenshaw.
The Congressman from Texas pushed back on her allegations that Republicans don’t take these tragedies seriously and suggested more security at schools throughout the nation.
It’s an unfortunate reality that unstable people target schools. Experts point to limited security and the attention that the deaths of young people garner.
“It’s not like criminal activity which you can target and prevent through law enforcement,” Crenshaw said.
“The truth of the matter is if we had a minimum of two armed guards or police officers at every single school in America, you‘d probably prevent these from here on out,” he said.
It’s been reported that the Nashville school shooter was looking at two different schools to carry out her plan and chose the less secure one.
Bash can’t deny that armed guards would go a long way in solving the problem so she insinuates again that Republicans do not want to make the safety of children a top priority.
“They’re done by guns, and guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the U.S.,” she said. “So shouldn’t helping save the lives of children be a top priority for you as a member of the House majority?”
No one is arguing that children should not be a top priority and Crenshaw said the way to prioritize the safety of children is with armed, trained security. It would “absolutely stop this,” he said.
“[T]here was nothing like that in these last few mass shootings. There are no armed guards there, so if I’m looking for actual solutions, that would be it,” he said pointing to recent the massacres in Nashville and Uvalde, Texas.
Bash refused to accept that premise. She replied, “So the answer is more guns?”
“No, the answer is armed guards,” he retorted. “The kind of guns that protect the President, that protect you all at CNN.”
Crenshaw brought up a point that a lot of people have been making…why are schools less protected than jewelry stores, politicians, media buildings, etc.?
“Is it easy to get into your headquarters at CNN? Absolutely not. There’s armed guards there. There’s single points of entry. I think we should look at our schools as a place that is precious and have the same kind of security that your corporate offices do, that we do in Congress,” he said.
‘You’re not going to get rid of guns,” Crenshaw said. “People will figure out other ways to commit mass violence,” he added.
There it is! A truth they don’t want to accept. You cannot unarm the population and expect the bad guys to follow the rules.
