Lawmakers call for Anthony Fauci’s resignation or firing amid his shifting positions concerning COVID-19.
Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical advisor to the president, has most recently changed his stance on the origins of COVID-19. One year ago, Fauci denied the possibility of the virus emerging unnaturally in a lab, stating, “If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats and what’s out there now, [the scientific evidence] is very, very strongly leaning toward this could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated … Everything about the stepwise evolution over time strongly indicates that [this virus] evolved in nature and then jumped species.” Now, the theory is under investigation. Fauci told PolitiFact, “Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out.”
Throughout the past year of the pandemic, Fauci also shifted his opinion on masks. In March of 2020 he said, “there’s no reason to be walking around with a mask,” in June he continued to discourage wearing masks due to a “short supply” of PPE. However, by January of 2021 masks were common-place in businesses and institutions. Fauci even suggested that double masking is “common sense, it’s more effective.” Representative Guy Reschenthaler of Pennsylvania said, “It is long past time for Dr. Fauci to stop talking to the American public. Fauci should resign or be fired immediately.” “Dr. Fauci is at odds with the CDC, he has repeatedly put political science ahead of the science on COVID-19,” said Representative Warren Davidson of Ohio.
