A mother of two children had her motherly instincts kick in when a burglar broke into her home, while she was showering.
She didn’t run away, but ran toward the intruder, shot him, and killed him without skipping a beat.
The mother remains unnamed, but she and her children live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her children are ages 12 and 14.
She was showering when she heard her children scream. Somehow she knew they were in trouble, so she ran to her bedroom and grabbed her gun.
When she reached the area of the home where her kids had been screaming, she found the burglar standing in the room. The mother reported that the man didn’t seem phased by the woman’s two pit bulls she had in her home. He rushed at the mother.
She, of course, was concerned that he was going to harm her children or herself, so she fired her gun in self-defense. She hit her target and stopped the threat and the man did not make it out alive.
She said, “It all happened so fast–an adrenaline rush.”
Police were called to the scene, most likely by the mother.
The woman was arrested on the scene and taken to the police department. She was released several hours later and referred the criminal case to the local District Attorney for review.
Bushraa Rahman, a community activist said, “She [the mother] was scared because her children were there with her. So, she did what any mother would do. She defended her children. It was an act of self-defense.”
No one has come forward and publically identified the man. When questioned, the woman described the man and said he appeared to be in his late thirties and was acting erratically when she saw him.
The woman said that her children are physically fine, but they are emotionally not doing well. They are moving out of their house so everyone can feel safe again.
The woman also told of the incident that caused her to buy a firearm.
She said she had found a man sleeping underneath her son’s bed ten years before.
Rahman, the community activist, said that the mother is a hero for protecting her children, but is sad that this even had to happen.
Rahman also said, “In today’s day and age, with mental health and everything else that’s taking place in the world, I mean, you better protect yourself. To be honest, you have to.”
Wisconsin is a Castle Doctrine state. This means that if you are in your home, car, or business there is a legal presumption that deadly force can be used against a person if they have broken into or are in the process of breaking into one of those locations, while you are present inside.
