In a remarkable act of betrayal, 148 leftist lawmakers voted against a bill to detain and deport illegal aliens who assault police officers.
On Wednesday evening, House members approved the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act with a 265 to 148 vote, with 54 Democrats leaving Party line and joined the GOP.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-New Jersey) was among the several legislations prepared by the Republican lawmakers in time for the National Police Week.
When Rep. Drew lobbied for the bill, he said: “There is no reason that an illegal alien who attacks our law enforcement should remain in our country; that shows zero respect for our rule of law or our institutions, and they will not be positive contributors to society.”
The bill proposes detention of illegal immigrants until they are processed for deportation. This will also pave way for the federal government to “create a new category for migrant inadmissibility” which is particularly focused on illegal aliens accused of attacking law enforcers.
House Republican leader Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minnesota) blasted Democrats who voted against the legislation. He said, “House Democrats just voted to protect violent illegal immigrants over our brave law enforcement officers. Once again, the Democrat Party proves they are the most anti-law enforcement party in history.”
The proposal comes after several reports of police officers being attacked by illegal immigrants without suffering any consequences for their actions.
In January a group of illegal aliens from Venezuela was caught in camera attacking two NYPD officers in Times Square.
Last March, a Washington State Patrol trooper was killed by a man who entered US illegally after crashing into him on an interstate highway.
Social Media Erupted
Democrats received backlash on social media after voting against the bill.
One X user said “How can anyone vote Democrat after this?”
State representative Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin wrote, “House Democrats are pro-crime, pro-open borders, and anti-police.
“Tonight, 148 Democrats voted AGAINST detaining and deporting illegal migrants who attack law enforcement officers. During National Police Week, they’d rather protect illegal criminals over the safety of our brave men and women in blue.
Disgraceful,” said Rep. Richard Hudson (R-North Carolina).
Rep. Ben Cline (R-Virginia) quipped, “Democrats continue to prioritize protecting illegal aliens over the safety of the American people.”
