House Speaker Johnson To Invite Netanyahu To Address Congress

After Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s embarrassing remark in the chamber last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) announced that he would invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak during a joint session of Congress to discuss Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

In an interview with CNBC, Johnson said, “I would love to have him come in and address a joint session of Congress.”

“We’ll certainly extend that invitation.”

Meanwhile, the House Speaker also received an invitation to speak to Israel’s Knesset. He also added that he needs to check if he would need Sen. Schumer’s permission to allow Netanyahu to address Congress.

“I’m the one that extends the invitations to speak in the House, and if we just have the House, that’s fine, too,” Johnson said.

“But I think a big majority of that Senate would want to come and stand in support of Netanyahu and Israel.”

According to Schumer’s office, the House Speaker has not shared this plan with the Senate majority leader.

However, in a statement, Schumer said that Israel “has no stronger ally than the United States, and our relationship transcends any one president or any one prime minister.”

“[He] will always welcome the opportunity for the prime minister of Israel to speak to Congress in a bipartisan way,” added Schumer.

However, this remark contradicts Schumer’s move last Wednesday, as he declined to allow Netanyahu, who spoke to Senate Republicans in a private video appearance, to also speak with Senate Democrats behind closed doors.

Early this week, Johnson and Netanyahu had a one-on-one conference, and he emphasized the need for the US as an ally to show solidarity and support for Israel.

Johnson also blasted Schumer’s “new election in Israel” speech, describing it as “patently absurd.”

“Imagine if I came on your show this morning and called for regime change in Ukraine, in the middle of their crisis, fighting for their very survival,” the House Speaker quipped.

“That’s what Israel is facing right now.

“And for the leader of the Senate to say such a thing was just outrageous.”

The Louisiana lawmaker also earlier quipped, “It’s dangerous for him to be trying to suggest how Israel should run its domestic affairs in the midst of their conflict. So you’ll see the House Republicans continue to stand forward and reiterate our support for Israel at this very critical time,” Johnson said.

Meanwhile, the White House is expected to receive delegates from Israel’s military and intelligence units.
