49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was never shy to profess his faith and how God helped him maintain his calm amidst the chaos as he led his team to the Super Bowl.
For Purdy, football is not about fame and status. In an interview, he said, “Life is about being a part of something bigger than yourself.”
He further expressed how he approaches popularity with a grounded outlook, “You get wrapped up in getting all the glory and the fame and the status, I feel like that’s a shallow life. And that can fade away pretty quickly.”
Purdy was always vocal about religion and has always been a devout Christian.
One instance is when he led the 49ers through their NFC Championship towards the end of last month. During the post-game interview, he never forgot to give all the glory to God for giving them the strength to make it to the Super Bowl LVII..
For Brock Purdy, faith is everything. He often shares that bible passages guide him in his second year in the National Football League.
As the year started, the quarterback said that Psalm 23 particularly stood out for him and that he reads before he starts his morning.
“This year for me it’s been Psalm 23. Yeah, ‘the Lord is my shepherd. I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. And it goes on,” Purdy shared.
The 24-year-old football player, the third youngest quarterback to make it to the Super Bowl, shared why he appreciates the scripture. He goes on, “Playing this game, playing this sport, there’s a lot that goes into it. It’s easy to get wrapped up in wanting and feeling like wanting to be loved obviously by your teammates and everybody but like the world. So, for me in that passage, it’s talking about I already have what I need from the Good Shepherd in Jesus.”
For Purdy, the glitz and the glam brought by the NFL can be very alluring, and how easy to get caught up in that.
The quarterback never brags about his looks or skills but knows fully well that it was never about him on the team, it’s more about how he can help and boost the team forward.
Before every game, the Arizona player would pray, but it was never for himself. He asked the Lord for guidance to stay grounded and silence the noise.
“It’s not ‘God, can we win here? Can we do something great here?’ It’s more just to have that peace, that steadfastness in all the chaos,” Brock Purdy shared.
“That’s really what it is, it’s sinking back into like, ‘Holy Spirit, take over and lead me here in this moment and allow me to think clearly’…And like I said, have an even-keeled state of mind that I get from the Holy Spirit.”
