Russian authorities noted that the US and its allies have been deeply involved in the Ukraine war.
“The issue of lowering the level of diplomatic relations is a standard practice for states that face unfriendly or hostile manifestations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Peskov added that “due to the growing involvement of the West in the conflict over Ukraine, the Russian Federation cannot but consider various options for responding to such hostile Western intervention in the Ukrainian crisis.”
Before this, Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to wreak havoc on Western countries and warned they could utilize nuclear weapons after Biden allowed the use of American weapons against Russia.
“If someone considers it possible to supply such weapons to a combat zone to strike our territory and create problems for us, then why do we not have the right to supply our weapons of the same class to those regions of the world from which the strikes will be carried out on sensitive objects of those countries that do this in relation to Russia?” Putin said.
“That is, the answer may be symmetrical. We will think about it.”
Early this year, the Putin regime also raised the possibility of weakening ties with Western governments if they pursued the confiscation of its frozen assets.
The G7 group of nations is weighing to utilize the $300 billion worth of Russian financial assets brought by sanctions imposed against Russia in 2022 in a bid to support Ukraine as their war drags on.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned that Moscow would not tolerate such a move and would retaliate economically and politically if the assets were seized.
“Lowering the level of diplomatic relations is one of the options, of course. Many high-ranking representatives in our government have already spoken about the issues of our financial, economic, and material response to this step (confiscation), which we are warning our opponents, as before, not to take,” Ryabkov said.
“We are now studying the optimal form of reaction, where countermeasures include actions against the assets of our Western opponents as well as diplomatic response measures.”
He did not spell out what lowering the level of diplomatic relations might entail. The Kremlin has characterized the current state of ties with the United States as “below zero”, although no formal downgrade of relations has occurred since the Ukraine war began.
