In the second impeachment article against Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of the Department of Homeland Security, lawmakers blasted Mayorkas for blatantly lying to Congress, as he claims that the border was “secure” and that his office had everything “under control.”
Since President Joe Biden took office, the DHS secretary has been his accomplice in his border blunders.
Chairman Mark Green (R-Tennesse) said, “Mr. Mayorkas lied to Congress.”
Green added, “Our investigation uncovered more than 100 instances in which Secretary Mayorkas misled the public.”
However, since 2021, everything that the secretary has done reflects otherwise.
According to a 250-page report released by the House Committee on Homeland Security, among his early blunders was when he revoked agreements with Mexico and other countries that had effectively blocked fake asylum claims by keeping the applicants out of the US territory while the DHS evaluated them.
In April 2023, during a House Committee hearing, Mayorkas reiterated his assertion that the “border is secure.”
After three months, the secretary again claimed their border security “is working.”
“Our approach to managing the borders securely and humanely — even within our fundamentally broken immigration system — is working,” says Mayorkas.
However, up until Governor Greg Abbott decided to install concertina wires along Shelby Park, the number of encounters recorded along the southern border has been at historic levels.
In December 2023, preliminary statistics from the Department of Homeland Security reported that the US border agents processed more than 225,000 migrants during the first 27 days of December, apart from the legal entries at ports of entry where the CBP processed an average of 50,000 migrants each month.
This number belies Mayorkas’s claim that the border is “secured” and Biden’s immigration policy “is working.”
Mayorkas also claimed that the situation at the border “is under control”, implying that there is no border crisis.
However, conditions on the ground and reports from “sanctuary states” contradict his statements.
Last month, Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman said, “There is a crisis. We have a crisis at our border, and it can’t be controversial that we should have a secure border.”
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston also said, “We’re hitting a breaking point, we cannot support this volume of migrants.”
Even New York City Mayor Eric Adams complained that the city has reached their breaking point.
“For many months, we were able to keep the visualization of this crisis from hitting our streets, but we have reached a breaking point and can no longer do that,” Mayor Eric Adams gruntled.
In November Adams was quoted, “This is an unsustainable crisis that is manmade. … This is not sustainable. … This should not be happening to the city of New York.”
The overwhelming number of border crossings resulted in Mayorkas’ decision to stop constructing a border wall that could control and manage illegal entry.
Furthermore, Biden and Mayorkas’ lax implementation of border security allowed criminal syndicates to profit billions. Drug cartels move around the country freely. To prove this, Fentanyl is now the biggest killer of our youth. Just in 2022, the DEA reported that they were only able to confiscate 10 percent of the drug.
The illegal migration resulted in a financial drain on the people’s money. According to a recent study, the total fiscal cost of illegal immigration has now reached $150.7 billion.
Another lie that Mayorkas has insisted was that the border crisis was “the fault of Congress,” as it refuses to approve “the needed resources” and that it has not “fixed” the “broken immigration system” for two decades.
But in reality, it was under Biden’s administration that dismantled the border. In 2019, under Trump, there were only a third of the recorded border encounters in 2022.
Moreover, the border agents fail to do their jobs because Mayorkas “has them acting as clerks to process and parole thousands of illegal immigrants a week.”
Mayorkas is lying through his teeth and the American people know this.
“He’s come to this Congress and he’s given testimony before that was demonstrably false, stating that our border was secure, stating that he had operational control of the border when in fact, every person in this room, and I dare say the vast majority of America, knows that is not the truth,” GOP Rep. Laurel Lee of Florida thundered.
