After months of resistance, Sen. Mitch McConnell finally declared support for Donald Trump as Nikki Haley failed miserably in the 2024 presidential race.
“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States. It should come as no surprise that, as the nominee, he will have my support.,” wrote McConnell in a statement.
“I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defense against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offense geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people.”
McConnell, who once pledged never to talk to Trump again after calling the former President’s alleged actions related to the January 6, 2021 demonstration “a disgraceful dereliction of duty”, made a complete turnaround on Wednesday.
His recent blunder was supporting the bipartisan border bill, which intends to send billions of military funding to Ukraine.
Earlier reports alleged that both camps conducted backchannel talks, but it was never confirmed.
The Kentucky senator announced last week that he would step back as Senate minority leader in November.
Haley Surrenders
Before backing out, Haley lost one of her big-time donors, Americans for Prosperity Action, but insisted that she would never back down.
After her epic loss on Super Tuesday, the former South Carolina governor finally threw in the towel.
Haley, however, refused to support former President Trump and instead challenged the Republican nominee to woo the swamps who voted for her.
“It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him, and I hope he does that. At its best, politics is about bringing people into your cause, not turning them away. And our conservative cause badly needs more people,” says Haley.
Trump slammed the former UN ambassador and said, “Nikki Haley got TROUNCED last night, in record-setting fashion, despite the fact that Democrats, for reasons unknown, are allowed to vote in Vermont and various other Republican Primaries.”
Ending his post, the GOP leader blasted Haley and said: “At this point, I hope she stays in the “race” and fights it out until the end! I’d like to thank my family, friends, and the Great Republican Party for helping me to produce, by far, the most successful Super Tuesday in HISTORY, and would further like to invite all of the Haley supporters to join the greatest movement in the history of our Nation. BIDEN IS THE ENEMY, HE IS DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
