New York has reached its target of giving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to 70 percent of its adult residents, Spectrum News reported, citing data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The benchmark has been touted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as the number the Empire State needed to reach in order to lift “virtually all” safety restrictions, including capacity limits in bars and restaurants and mandatory health screenings. Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted the following; “Today New York state reached our goal of 70% adult vaccination. That means we can return to life as we know it. Effective immediately, state-mandated COVID restrictions are lifted across commercial and social settings.”
New York has consistently increased the pace of vaccinations whilst across the country, progress has been slower. President Biden had hoped to have 70 percent of adults vaccinated by July 4, but it appears that goal will be missed. While New York, which was an early epicenter of the global outbreak last March and April, has recorded more than 2 million cases and almost 53,000 Covid deaths, it now boasts one of the lowest positivity rates in the United States.
On Sunday, the seven-day positivity rate across the state was 0.41%, down from a high of 7.9% on Jan. 4. Every region of the state has a positivity rate below 1%. New York is planning to honor front-line workers with a fireworks display on Tuesday.
