President Trump Declared ‘Fully Fit’ for Office Following Physical Exam

Donald Trump’s physician has declared that the oldest individual ever elected to the presidency is “fully fit” to fulfill the role of commander in chief, as the White House released the findings of his latest physical exam on Sunday. Now 78 years old, Trump has lost 20 pounds since his 2020 presidential checkup, which had placed him near the threshold of obesity.

According to Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, Trump’s “active lifestyle” has “continues to contribute significantly” to the Republican leader’s overall health. Trump will celebrate his 79th birthday on June 14.

In a detailed three-page summary of the physical conducted on Friday, Barbabella stated that Trump is “fully fit to execute the duties of Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.” His current weight was recorded at 224 pounds, down from 244 pounds in his previous physical more than four years ago.

Trump’s body mass index (BMI)—a metric used to assess weight in relation to height—has dropped to 28.0, placing him in the overweight category. In 2020, his BMI measured at 30.5, which qualified as obese.

The report also mentioned that Trump had undergone cataract surgery in both eyes, although no specific dates were provided. This procedure, common among older adults, involves removing a cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one to improve vision.

In July 2024, while still a candidate, Trump had a colonoscopy that revealed a benign polyp and a condition called diverticulosis, the summary said. Diverticulosis is a common age-related condition where intestinal walls become weakened. While it can lead to inflammation, many with the condition never experience symptoms.

Barbabella noted that Trump again completed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a brief screening used to evaluate various brain functions. The test includes tasks such as recalling spoken words and repeating sequences of numbers in reverse.

Known as the MoCA, this is the same cognitive exam Trump took in 2018, later recalling during an interview that he had listed words in sequence: “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.”

The president was also evaluated for depression and anxiety during the exam, scoring within the normal range on both assessments, the report said.

When asked about the physical afterward, Trump commented, “I think I did very well.”

He left the hospital and headed straight to Air Force One en route to Florida for the weekend. Speaking with reporters while in flight, Trump mentioned that doctors had given him “a little bit” of advice on potential lifestyle changes for better health but did not go into detail.

“Overall, I felt I was in very good shape. A good heart, a good soul, a very good soul,” Trump said. He also highlighted that he took a cognitive test. “I don’t know what to tell you other than I got every answer right,” he added.

Although Trump holds the distinction of being the oldest person elected to the presidency, he is still four years younger than Democrat Joe Biden, who completed his term at age 82.

While Trump has frequently questioned Biden’s physical and mental capacity—claiming Biden is not in control—he has often kept specifics about his own health under wraps, differing from the more open approach traditionally adopted by presidents from both major political parties.

That said, presidents are entitled to keep their medical records private. Still, releasing results from annual checkups often serves to reassure the public about the health of their leader.

In his medical memo, Barbabella described Trump’s health as “excellent,” noting “robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and general physical function.”

The report noted that Trump maintains a busy schedule filled with meetings, public events, media appearances, and “frequent victories in golf events.” A passionate golfer, Trump claims to have recently won tournaments at golf courses he owns in Florida.

His cholesterol has steadily improved, thanks in part to medications like rosuvastatin and ezetimibe.

Back in January 2018, Trump’s total cholesterol was 223. It dropped to 196 in 2019, then to 167 in 2020, and is now down to 140. A total cholesterol level below 200 is generally considered desirable.

His blood pressure measured at 128 over 74, a reading that is slightly elevated. Without intervention, this level can potentially progress to hypertension.

Trump’s resting heart rate was recorded at 62 beats per minute, consistent with past results. For adults, a normal resting heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 bpm, with lower values typically indicating better cardiovascular health.

He also takes aspirin, a medication that can help lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The exam also revealed minor sun-related skin damage and several benign lesions, but no abnormal or suspicious growths. Additionally, it confirmed scarring on Trump’s right ear from a gunshot wound sustained during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024.

Barbabella, who oversaw and conducted the exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, included diagnostic imaging, lab tests, and evaluations by 14 different medical specialists as part of the comprehensive assessment.

A highly decorated Navy physician, Barbabella has expertise in emergency and tactical medicine and served multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. His accolades include the Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit, two of the military’s highest honors.

He is also the third straight osteopathic physician to serve as White House doctor, following the personal physicians of both Biden and Trump in previous terms. Before assuming his current role, Barbabella led a naval health clinic in Havelock, North Carolina.
