Rep. Marjorie Greene from Georgia, said on Thursday that she has filed for articles of impeachment against newly elected President Joe Biden, only a day after his inauguration.
Her announcement was in response to the impeachment last week of President Donald Trump in his final days of office. The Senate is set to hear the case of the now former President Trump in the upcoming weeks.
“President Joe Biden is unfit to hold the office of the presidency. His pattern of abuse of power as President Obama’s Vice President is lengthy and disturbing. President Biden has demonstrated that he will do whatever it takes to bail out his son, Hunter, and line his family’s pockets with cash from corrupt foreign energy companies,” Greene stated.
Greene indicated that the articles accuse Joe Biden of abusing his power while serving as vice president by allowing his son, Hunter, to serve on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.
House Democrats have not yet formally sent the articles of impeachment against Trump over his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol to the Senate for a trial.
Charles Schumer Democrat (N.Y.) and Mitch McConnell Republican (Ky.) are still working out a power-sharing agreement in a chamber that’s now evenly divided by party. Vice President Harris will serve as a tie-breaking vote.
Greene’s move seems to be symbolic. Congress will be controlled by Democrats and she would need a simple majority of the members to bring the charges to the Senate.
Greene’s announcement seems to be at odds with many in her own party who say Donald Trump’s second impeachment was unnecessarily divisive at a time when the country needs to start coming together.
