A new study finds that there are an estimated 1.2 million nonbinary adults living in the United States.
The Williams Institute at UCLA conducted the study, “Using data from the Generations and TransPop studies … this study examines the demographics and characteristics of LGBTQ adults, ages 18-60, who identify as nonbinary.” According to the institute, the majority of the 1.2 million adults are under the age of 29 and white. The report continues, “The majority of nonbinary adults use queer, bisexual, pansexual, or asexual to describe their sexual orientation.”
Nonbinary individuals fall into numerous LGBTQ+ populations. “About 11% of the LGBTQ adults (age 18-60 years) identify as nonbinary in terms of their gender. While nonbinary-identified people are among both cisgender and transgender LGBTQ populations, they make up a larger proportion of the transgender population than of the cisgender LGBQ adult population.”
The study notes the differences between binary and nonbinary people, for instance, health concerns among the two groups. The report notes “higher rates of depression but lower rates of mental health care usage among nonbinary people.” According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, nonbinary individuals do not have a male or female gender.
