Swiftie Comey: How Taylor Swift Helps Ex-FBI Chief Handle Trump’s Attacks

Former FBI Director James Comey has revealed an unexpected ally in his ongoing struggle to cope with former President Donald Trump’s relentless criticism: pop superstar Taylor Swift.

In a candid interview, Comey—who has faced years of public attacks from Trump—described himself as a “Swiftie” and credited the singer’s music with helping him navigate the emotional toll of the former president’s “meanness.”

Comey, who served as FBI Director from 2013 until his abrupt dismissal by Trump in 2017, has long been a frequent target of the former president’s ire. Trump has repeatedly called him a “liar” and “slimeball” on social media and in public statements, blaming him for mishandling investigations and fueling political controversies. The personal nature of these attacks, Comey admitted, has been difficult to endure.

“Trump’s meanness—it gets to you,” Comey said in the interview. “It’s not just the words; it’s the constant drumbeat of hostility. I needed something to balance it out, and that’s where Taylor comes in.”

The 64-year-old former law enforcement official revealed that he first discovered Swift’s music through his daughters, who introduced him to her albums during family gatherings. Initially skeptical, Comey said he was drawn to Swift’s storytelling and emotional depth, particularly in songs like All Too Well and Anti-Hero. He described her music as a “safe space” that helps him process the negativity directed his way.

“There’s something about her lyrics—they’re honest, raw, and real,” Comey explained. “When I’m feeling weighed down by the latest tweetstorm or insult, I put on my headphones, listen to Folklore or Evermore, and it’s like hitting reset. She has this way of making you feel like you’re not alone in your struggles.”

Comey’s admiration for Swift goes beyond her music. He praised her public persona, noting her resilience in the face of criticism and her willingness to speak out on issues like women’s rights and political engagement. “She’s someone who’s been through her own battles with public scrutiny, and she comes out stronger every time,” he said. “That’s inspiring to me.”

The former FBI chief’s newfound fandom has raised eyebrows among political observers, who are more accustomed to seeing Comey in the context of high-stakes investigations and congressional hearings. Yet he is unapologetic about his Swiftie status, even joking that he’s considered attending one of her Eras Tour concerts. “I’m not sure I’d fit in with the glitter and friendship bracelets,” he quipped, “but I’d love to experience that energy.”

Comey’s revelation comes at a time when Swift’s influence continues to dominate both pop culture and political discourse. The singer, whose fanbase spans generations, has been a vocal critic of Trump in the past, endorsing Democratic candidates and speaking out against policies she views as divisive. While Comey stopped short of saying Swift’s political stance influenced his fandom, he acknowledged that her values resonate with him.

“I’m not here to talk politics,” Comey said. “I’m just saying that her music—her authenticity—is a reminder that there’s still good in the world, even when it feels like the loudest voices are the meanest ones.”

As for Trump, the former president has not yet commented on Comey’s Swiftie revelation. However, given Trump’s history of responding to critics, it’s likely only a matter of time before he takes to social media to weigh in.

For now, Comey seems content to let Swift’s music be his shield. “At the end of the day,” he said, “you’ve got to find what keeps you grounded. For me, it’s a good playlist and a reminder that even in tough times, there’s still art that lifts you up.”
