In another win for free speech, Twitter removed its ban on using “biologically accurate pronouns” and deadnaming people.
The American Spectator pointed out the irony of the freak-out coming from the Left. “This victory for freedom of speech won scorn from outlets existentially dependent on freedom of speech,” an article read.
How is it that the media are so against the 1st Amendment when it is so important to the job?
Freedom of the press means that the media are not subject to censorship by the government. So again, why would they be against it?
The Associated Press said Twitter’s removal of the ban stirs up “concerns that the Elon Musk-owned platform is becoming less safe for marginalized groups.”
To which one Twitter user replied, “Pronouns don’t make anyone “safe”. Free Speech keeps ALL of us Safe from tyranny.”
Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of the Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), feels that the new policy will lead to “violence against transgender people.”
“Twitter’s decision to covertly roll back its longtime policy is the latest example of just how unsafe the company is for users and advertisers alike,” said Ellis.
“This decision to roll back LGBTQ safety pulls Twitter even more out of step with TikTok, Pinterest, and Meta, which all maintain similar policies to protect their transgender users at a time when anti-transgender rhetoric online is leading to real-world discrimination and violence,” she added.
Other hot takes online included more anti-free speech rhetoric. When Big Tech is no longer able to police what is written or spoken on every social media platform, the woke crowd has a difficult time handling it.
“Twitter lifts its policy on targeted misgendering and deadnaming and the freaks are out gleefully misgendering and deadnaming every prominent trans person as an achievement. It’s not about speech, it’s about bullies wanting to harass people because of who they are,” said activist Alejandra Caraballo.
“Every decision Musk makes is bad for free speech, safety, business,” tweeted attorney Nora Benavidez.
“This is absolutely exhausting. Every day something else happens to show just how much people despise trans people and don’t care about what happens to us and it’s really f***ing overwhelming and frightening,” said a user who identifies as a bisexual.
Others came out in support of the move by Twitter’s new CEO.
Twitter user AXL @axl whose Twitter bio reads, “Banned in 2020 — Freed by Elon Musk in 2022,” wrote, “Great news. This is a step toward living in reality and having policy rooted in Truth instead of emotion” on his Twitter feed.
Portland-based Journalist Andy Ngo tweeted, “Twitter has now removed its “deadnaming” ban. Deadnaming is using a #trans person’s prior or current legal name. The ban made it harder to report about a trans person’s criminal history where convictions happened under a prior name. Thank you, @elonmusk”
For years, Twitter kicked users off the site for misgendering people or for saying men can’t have babies.
When one side is silenced or forced to alter their speech, there can be no debate. There is no room for alternate ideas or opposition to approved narratives.
