Trump demands that New York AG Letitia James drop $454 MILLION civil fraud case ‘for the greater good of the country’

In a bold move, lawyers representing President-elect Donald J. Trump have formally requested that New York Attorney General Letitia James drop her ongoing case against him, his family, and his businesses “for the greater good of the country,” as reported by the New York Post.

In a letter addressed to James, Trump attorney D. John Sauer stated, “In furtherance of our conversations with your office, we write to request that you completely dismiss the above-referenced case against President Donald J. Trump, his family, and his businesses, and stipulate to vacate the Judgment and dismiss all claims with prejudice.”

This request comes in the wake of Trump’s appeal against a substantial $454 million civil fraud judgment imposed by James. The New York appeals court judges have the potential to reverse this judgment entirely.

Sauer emphasized Trump’s commitment to national unity, asserting, “President Trump has called for our Nation’s partisan strife to end, and for the contending factions to join forces for the greater good of the country.” He further elaborated on his personal experiences with the divisive political climate, stating, “As counsel for President Trump in this appeal — and now as his nominee for Solicitor General of the United States — I have had the opportunity to experience this partisan division personally, and I strongly believe that it is necessary for the health of our Republic for the strife and lawfare to end.”

Sauer urged James to seize the moment, declaring, “You now have the singular opportunity to help cure this division,” and characterized the ongoing legal battles against Trump as “a flashpoint of national partisan division.”

In his letter, Sauer pointed to recent developments in other legal cases involving Trump, including a request from special counsel Jack Smith that was granted by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, which dismissed Smith’s case against Trump regarding the 2020 election. He also noted that Judge Juan Merchan allowed Trump to file a motion to dismiss the Manhattan District Attorney’s case, which had previously found Trump guilty.

“This case warrants the same treatment,” Sauer asserted, highlighting the absence of any wrongdoing in James’ case, stating there were “no victims, no complaints, no misstatements, no causation, and no injuries or losses.”

Sauer further argued that Trump had provided “clear and unambiguous disclaimers to sophisticated commercial parties who made decisions based on their own due diligence.” He noted that Trump’s business partners “were delighted with these transactions” and “benefited enormously, making over $100 million in profits.”

The attorney also expressed concern over the broader implications of the case, stating, “the chilling effect generated by this case is crushing to businesses across New York, who are being forced to flee to friendlier States where such standardless enforcement and excessive punishment are not found.” He emphasized that the lawsuit against Trump “vindicates no public purpose.”

In a historical context, Sauer invoked President Abraham Lincoln’s call for unity, quoting, “President [Abraham] Lincoln called for the American people to set aside their bitter divisions so that the blessings of liberty could be ‘solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.'” He continued, “He urged all Americans to ‘fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.'”

Concluding his appeal, Sauer stated, “Invoking the same spirit of unity, we request that you stipulate to the vacatur of the Judgment and dismissal of this case with prejudice.”
