Republican representative Majorie Greene was suspended from Twitter for allegedly spreading COVID-19 ‘misinformation.’
Greene’s Twitter feed is critical of the COVID-19 vaccine, mask mandates, and the post leading to her suspension claimed the only people susceptible to the virus are obese and elderly. A Twitter spokesperson said, “We took enforcement action on the account …(@mtgreenee) for violations of the Twitter rules, specifically the COVID-19 misleading information policy.”
Greene’s suspension only lasts 12 hours, although her account is now more likely to be banned if she continues sharing content that Twitter deems ‘misinformation.’ Twitter’s efforts to prevent so-called misleading COVID-19 information are in tune with calls from the Biden administration. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said, “I am urging all Americans to help slow the spread of health misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.”
Furthermore, the Democrat National Committee and White House officials are “planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS [Short Message Service] carriers to dispel misinformation about vaccines.” Big Tech companies have the capacity to censor accounts that share non-mainstream opinions concerning the virus and vaccines.
