WATCH: Aide To Senior House Democrat Handcuffed In Tense Standoff With Federal Agents

A staff member working for U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler (R-NY) was handcuffed and held by federal authorities after allegedly allowing protesters to take refuge in the congressman’s Manhattan office.

According to a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security, the individual was detained when agents responded to reports of anti-ICE demonstrators inside the office. Video obtained by Gothamist captured a federal officer restraining one staffer while another attempted to prevent entry and insisted on seeing a warrant.

“I’m a federal officer, we’re here checking on something,” the DHS agent said to the employee standing in the doorway. “We have the right to check. You are harboring rioters in the office,” he added in a heated back-and-forth before the staffer eventually relented and granted him access to a back office.

The Department of Homeland Security informed the New York Post that officers from the Federal Protective Service arrived to perform a safety inspection following claims that demonstrators were inside the building. A DHS spokesperson stated that “based on earlier incidents in a nearby facility, FPS officers were concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office and went to the location to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those present.”

One woman on Nadler’s staff was held after confronting agents and attempting to block the doorway, despite their explanation for the visit. “The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check,” DHS said.

The staffer was released following the confrontation, which reportedly began when another aide welcomed two activists tracking ICE activity at the courthouse into the office.

Nadler criticized the Trump Administration in remarks to the New York Times, calling them “fascists.”

“The Trump administration is trying to intimidate members of Congress,” he said. “They’re behaving like fascists. We have to fight them. We don’t want to be a fascist country.”

The episode occurred amid an increasingly aggressive approach by both DHS and the Department of Justice toward demonstrators and activists accused of interfering with federal agents during immigration enforcement efforts.

On May 13, DHS revealed that two people in Los Angeles were charged with conspiracy to obstruct an officer. The charges stemmed from actions taken to stop federal agents from pursuing operations targeting an identified human smuggler.
