In. A new announcement, The Minneapolis city council announced 2022 budget restores funding for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD)

The MPD will receive millions of dollars worth of funding under a new budget approved by the city council as the crime rate is constantly increasing in the city since defending the police department.

Democrat Mayor Jacob Frey and the City Council announced a $191 million budget for the Police Department which restores it nearly to the level of what it was before the George Floyd incident in 2020

Last year, both the mayor and city council members supported Black Lives Matter (BLM) and the Defund The Police movement and proposed replacing the police department with mental health services.

Since that announcement, the crime rate has surged in the city and criminals are uncontrollable ever since. Minneapolis joined several other Democrat cities to refund its police department after defunding it during the 2020 BLM riots.

Many communities in Minneapolis welcomed this new budget and refunded the police department to ensure public safety in the city.

“This vote is a first step on a long road back from the division over public safety that has characterized the past 18 tumultuous months in Minneapolis,” said Steve Cramer, president of the Downtown Council.

The MPD has seen over 300 resignations and retirements just in the last year which lead to an already defunded department being short-staffed.

A statement from the mayor’s public office read that the newly-passed budget reflected a “sustained commitment to public safety.”
