In a recent virtual campaign event, Democratic Michigan Representative Elissa Slotkin, who is vying for a Senate seat, expressed serious concerns about Vice President Kamala Harris’ standing in the crucial battleground state of Michigan. According to a report from Axios, Slotkin candidly told donors, “I’m not feeling my best right now about where we are on Kamala Harris in a place like Michigan.”
Slotkin’s remarks come as polling indicates that Harris is facing significant challenges. “We have her underwater in our polling,” Slotkin added, highlighting the precarious position of the Vice President as she campaigns in a state that has become pivotal for both parties.

Recent polling data reveals that former President Donald Trump is closing the gap on Harris in Michigan. A New York Times/Siena College poll shows Harris with 48% support among likely voters, while Trump is right on her heels at 47%, effectively creating a tie within the margin of error. Additionally, a USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll released last week indicated Harris had a slight edge over Trump, leading by three points, but with a margin of error of 4.4%.
As the 2024 election approaches, Michigan remains a key battleground, with both Harris and Trump actively campaigning across the state, as well as in other critical areas like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Wisconsin. The stakes are high; if Trump can secure votes from the Sunbelt states, he would only need to win either Michigan, Wisconsin, or Pennsylvania to claim victory. Conversely, Harris must focus on solidifying her support in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania to pave her path to success.
Historically, Michigan has been a swing state, with Trump narrowly winning it in 2016 by a mere 0.23% against Hillary Clinton, while President Biden reclaimed it in 2020 with a 2.78% margin over Trump.
Slotkin, who has represented Michigan’s 8th Congressional District since 2019, announced her Senate candidacy following the decision of Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow not to seek re-election. While Slotkin’s comments regarding Harris’ polling may serve as a rallying cry for donations, the campaign has yet to respond to inquiries for further clarification.
