This story is not about how much WNBA players make. Or how unfair that women athletes don’t get paid the same amount as men.
For one thing, no one cares about women’s sports. People only care if there is a movie about them or if they made headlines.
Hence why we are forced to talk about Brittney Griner. She had marijuana on her person in Russia and was arrested for it.
The WNBA player had to go back to Russia, and she pleaded guilty to the drug charges. Brittney Griner now faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. However, her story has caused a storm.
People want her home. This is a Russian prison, after all, and an American housed in a prison cell run by a country where the general public feel is an enemy of the United States is a tense situation.
The media has been downplaying the circumstances because it will make Joe Biden look bad. Even Griner’s coach, Vanessa Nygaard, said:
“If it was LeBron, he’d be home, right?”
Griner’s wife did her best for Former Vice President Joe Biden by giving him a “pat on the back” PR.
ABC News reported:
“I believe every word that she said to him, he understood and he sees her as a person,” Cherelle Griner said at a press conference in Chicago on Friday afternoon. “And he has not forgotten her, which was her biggest cry in her letter.”

“White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told ABC News on Thursday that the president was “deeply moved” by Griner’s letter, but wouldn’t say what the president wrote in his response.
“I’m grateful and I’m thankful that the administration that was the first one that BG ever voted for, took the time to see her as a person,” Cherelle Griner continued, “to see her in the midst of what she’s going through and to speak to me directly and let her know that they are exhausting all efforts to bring her home.”
If the media was honest, a simple letter means nothing. However, it is more than what other families have received. Another American, Paul Whelan, has been detained in Russia since 2018.

“Whelan’s family is furious with the administration of President Joe Biden after the president spoke to Griner’s wife but has not contacted them, The Independent reported.
“It’s really wonderful they have resources far beyond what our family does,” Whelan’s sister, Elizabeth Whelan, said. “Our concern is why the outreach to some families and not others?”
“I was astonished to hear about this call and it did make me wonder,” she said. “Should we be pushing for a meeting with the president? Is that what it’s going to take to bring my brother home?”
If Paul Whelan were Chris Evans, the Former Vice President might reach out to his family.

All of professional sports players seem to forget why they are able to get so wealthy. They live in the greatest country in the world where American citizens think enough of their abilities to pay to see them perform. That can change very rapidly cutting off that money which allows them to think that they are above everyone else. If you expect respect then give it in return or be humbled in return. She has to do the time!
