WASHINGTON, D.C. — April 28, 2026 — A 31-year-old man from Torrance, California, has been charged with the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump after he breached a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25 and opened fire, authorities said.
Cole Tomas Allen was taken into custody after firing a single shot that struck a law enforcement officer. The officer’s protective vest prevented serious injury or death. Secret Service agents and other officers immediately tackled Allen, who suffered only a minor knee injury during the takedown. No other injuries were reported.
Trump, his wife Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials were safely evacuated from the event, which was abruptly canceled.
