Tallahassee, Fla. (July 30, 2026) — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appeared on Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime Tuesday evening, vigorously defending his state’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and launching sharp criticism at former White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci.
DeSantis highlighted Florida’s early resistance to prolonged lockdowns, the swift lifting of mask mandates, and the decision to keep schools open—policies that frequently put the state at odds with federal recommendations at the time.
“Florida did the right thing,” DeSantis told host Jesse Watters. “We pushed back against broad lockdowns, we ended mask rules early, and we made sure our kids got back in school. The results speak for themselves.”
The governor accused Fauci of actively interfering in Florida’s affairs by encouraging local officials to impose stricter mandates and fueling negative media coverage against the state’s approach. DeSantis claimed that his administration successfully blocked those efforts, protecting Florida’s autonomy during the crisis.
The remarks come on the heels of a contentious Senate hearing in which Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment rights more than 100 times while facing intense questioning from Republicans, some of whom have called for contempt proceedings.
DeSantis seized on the moment, referencing reported diary entries from Fauci in which the former health official reportedly referred to the governor as a “jerk.” Far from being offended, DeSantis framed the insult as confirmation that his policies were on the right track.
“If that’s what he thought of me, then I know we were doing the right thing for the people of Florida,” DeSantis said.
Florida’s pandemic strategy has long been a flashpoint in national debates. Supporters credit the state’s lighter-touch approach with preserving economic activity and educational outcomes, while critics argue that it contributed to higher death rates at certain points in the pandemic. DeSantis has consistently pointed to data on excess deaths, school performance, and economic recovery as evidence that Florida’s path outperformed that of many states that followed stricter, federally aligned measures.
The governor’s appearance on Fox News underscores ongoing partisan divides over pandemic policymaking more than six years after the virus first emerged. As investigations and hearings into the federal government’s COVID response continue, DeSantis positioned Florida as a model of resistance to what he described as federal overreach.
