Washington, D.C. — April 20, 2026 — Newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel announced Monday that the bureau possesses fresh evidence supporting President Donald Trump’s long-standing claims of irregularities in the 2020 presidential election and expects to make arrests “soon” in coordination with the Department of Justice.
In an exclusive interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, Patel stated that investigators have uncovered material from previously restricted files that he says bolsters assertions of election fraud. He hinted that “developments could come this week” as federal probes continue to seize records from counties in Georgia, Arizona, and Michigan.
“These aren’t just allegations anymore,” Patel told Bartiromo. “We now have the evidence from the files that were locked away. The American people deserve accountability, and the FBI, working hand-in-hand with the DOJ, is prepared to deliver it.”
Patel was confirmed as FBI director in February 2025 following Trump’s return to the White House. The director’s comments mark the most direct public pledge yet from a top law enforcement official to pursue criminal charges tied to the 2020 contest, which Joe Biden won with 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232.

However, multiple previous investigations — including those conducted by courts, state audits, and even Trump’s own administration — found no evidence of widespread fraud sufficient to alter the election’s outcome. Federal and state officials, as well as Republican-appointed judges, repeatedly rejected claims of systemic irregularities.
Reactions broke sharply along partisan lines. Trump allies and many Republican lawmakers praised Patel’s announcement as long-overdue justice. “Finally, the deep state is being held accountable,” said one senior GOP congressional aide who asked not to be named.
Critics, including Democratic leaders and election-integrity watchdogs, dismissed the comments as politically motivated theater. “There is zero credible evidence of fraud that changed the 2020 results, and this appears to be nothing more than an attempt to rewrite history,” said a Democratic strategist familiar with the matter.
As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been announced. The FBI and DOJ declined to comment beyond Patel’s televised remarks.
The development comes amid ongoing reviews of 2020 voting procedures in several battleground states. County officials in Georgia, Arizona, and Michigan have confirmed that federal agents have executed search warrants for election-related records in recent weeks.
Legal experts caution that any potential prosecutions would face significant hurdles, including statutes of limitations on certain election-related offenses and the high bar for proving criminal intent in complex voting disputes.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
