Military strength serves as a cornerstone of a nation’s power. It goes beyond traditional defense and transcends to diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian fields. It also influences global dynamics in various ways. As the 2024 presidential election draws near, and amid the threat of foreign attacks, it is essential to discuss why we must maintain military strength.

First, a robust military supports diplomatic efforts. It places us in a favorable position to negotiate, bargain, and swiftly resolve conflicts. A strong military serves as a deterrent and often pushes adversaries toward a peaceful settlement and compromise. It plays an integral role in strengthening diplomacy with other countries or entities.

In terms of economy, a strong military can guard trade routes, and preserve lanes of commerce and finance. For instance, the US Navy played a significant role in boosting economic trade in the Asia-Pacific region. They prevent possible clashes that could impede the economy and trade relations. They also maintain peace in the area by securing maritime systems.

Military strength is also vital in creating alliances and empowering security commitments. It encourages allies to allocate more to defense spending, ensure collective security, and deter possible adversaries. It also attracts other nations to align with a powerful ally.

Issues on arms control usually hinge on military prowess. Historically, we can look back at the INF Treaty and see how large-scale deployment of military assets can put pressure on adversaries and often move them to negotiate. Therefore, the military might play a significant role in forging strategic agreements and maintaining global stability.

A strong military also fulfills a role in promoting human rights and democracy. It ensures seamless democratic transitions and reforms in governance and human rights practices through security assistance programs.

Security assistance programs with allied nations can provide essential support, especially during critical phases of democratic transitions. A strong military helps stabilize situations, offers security, and supports the rule of law, paving the way for a smoother transition toward better governance.

The military also provides support during humanitarian efforts and amplifies diplomacy. It offers leadership in humanitarian aid operations and garners more support internationally.

Additionally, a strong military aids in intelligence gathering and technical cooperation, it fosters healthy diplomatic intelligence exchange and strategic cooperation.

Investing in a strong military allows the United States to ward off potential threats and overcome possible advantages that rival countries may seek.

The US military relies on science and technology, thus making it imperative that our military systems remain advanced.

The military strength of the United States does not only ensure the safety of its citizens but also safeguards regions that are important to US interests.

On Thursday, Congress ratified the National Defense Authorization Act, which gives the DoD and Pentagon $874.2 billion for the defense budget, the highest military budget since World War II.

Despite these, a recent study by the Heritage Foundation reflects that the “U.S. military force is at significant risk of not being able to meet the demands of a single major regional conflict.”

Biden administration’s poor priorities, poor discipline in program execution, lack of seriousness in confronting security threats, and wildly shifting security policies heavily influence the current condition of our military today.

This comes at a precarious time globally, where wars are taking place in Ukraine, the Middle East, Israel, and China continues to flex its prowess in the South China Sea.
