Texas Republican Representative Pat Fallon has filed articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“Since day one, Secretary Mayorkas’ policies have undermined law enforcement activities at our southern border. From perjuring himself before Congress about maintaining operational control of the border to the infamous ‘whip-gate’ slander against our border patrol agents, Secretary Mayorkas has proven time and time again that he is unfit to lead the Department of Homeland Security. His willful actions have eroded our immigration system, undermined border patrol morale, and jeopardized American national security. He has violated the law and it is time for him to go,” Fallon said last week.
The articles of impeachment against Mayorkas for “high crimes and misdemeanors”, known as House Resolution 8, were introduced by Fallon in the House on Monday, and have now been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
The first article of impeachment accuses Mayorkas of failing to execute the “Secure the Fence Act of 2006,” which is a law requiring the DHS secretary “maintain operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders of the United States.”
The second article alleges that Mayorkas was “in violation of his constitutional oath, willfully provided perjurious, false, and misleading testimony to Congress.”
Lastly, the third article says Mayorkas “publicly and falsely slandered” border agents who were accused and cleared of whipping Haitian migrants in Del Rio, Texas, in 2021.
“The 511-page report by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Personal Responsibility found ‘no evidence that [Border Patrol agents] involved in this incident struck, intentionally or otherwise, any migrant with their reins,’” Fallon writes.
“Secretary Mayorkas slandered his own Border Patrol agents and TXDPS Troopers involved in this incident, contributing to a further decrease in already-low morale among agents.”
Mayorkas made an appearance on the ABC show “This Week” and said that he doesn’t have any intention of resigning. He knows he faces investigations and articles of impeachment, though.
This is the first time the House has been controlled by Republicans since Biden took office.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called on Mayorkas to resign back in November, saying that the DHS chief had failed to secure the southern border, leading to the immigration crisis. McCarthy warned then that if Mayorkas didn’t resign, he could be impeached.
“If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action and every failure and will determine whether we can begin impeachment inquiry,” McCarthy said in November 2022, during a visit to the US-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas.
The migrant crossings at the southern border have surpassed 2.4 million in 2022. This broke the previous record by more than 1 million, according to data from Customs and Border Protection.
I’ll believe it when hes impeached, till then this is just more muckraking.
You will never get real justice even if these monsters are impeached. Looking at the damage they have wrought on this nation and the world they deserve far worse!
I support this and it’s a good start, but the corruption runs deep and wide on the left. It will be a fight like we’ve never experienced in America trying to go against the deepstate. It must be done.
Just Republican leadership grandstanding as usual bc they know none of this makes it through the Democrat majority in the Senate. IT’S TOO LATE, BABY. Impeach him now, after we have 5 million migrants?? – among whom are any number who will destroy our way of life?? Is it true or not that other countries emptied their prisons and asylums onto our border? Not to mention how many terrorists they KNOW of?? The government thinks we’re stupid, but – WE MUST BE!
