Kennedy Faces Tough Questions in House Hearing on Health Agenda

Washington, D.C. — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. endured sharp questioning from Democrats during a House Ways and Means Committee oversight hearing Thursday, as lawmakers scrutinized his plans for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and his approach to public health policy under the incoming Donald Trump administration.

The hearing quickly turned partisan, with Democrats pressing Kennedy on several high-profile issues, including his decision to reinstate 850 suspended Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance brokers, his long-standing skepticism toward vaccines despite lacking a medical degree, and his support for funding a controversial promotional video featuring him and musician Kid Rock drinking milk shirtless rather than traditional pro-vaccine public health campaigns.

Kennedy, nominated to lead HHS, defended his agenda by emphasizing a shift toward addressing the root causes of chronic disease through improved nutrition and food policy. He repeatedly stressed the importance of “informed consent” in medical decisions and highlighted what he described as broader efforts to combat fraud and waste across federal health programs.

“Most secretaries of HHS in the past did not have medical degrees, and that has not stopped us from focusing on what truly matters: making Americans healthier through better food and honest information,” Kennedy told the committee, according to hearing transcripts.

Republicans on the panel praised Kennedy’s commitment to cracking down on fraud within HHS programs, portraying it as a much-needed reform. However, the session was marked by heated exchanges, including personal clashes over Kennedy’s views on ADHD medications and proposed environmental rollbacks that Democrats argued would harm public health.

The testimony underscored the intense partisan divide expected to define confirmation battles and policy debates surrounding Trump’s broader health overhaul. With Democrats vowing continued oversight, Kennedy’s appearance signaled that his unconventional priorities — from vaccine policy to nutrition-based chronic disease prevention — will face rigorous examination in the weeks and months ahead.

The hearing comes as the Trump transition team pushes forward with its health policy agenda, setting the stage for what could be one of the most contentious periods in recent HHS history.
