McKINNEY, Texas — The McKinney City Council on Thursday approved plans for a new Islamic facility proposed by the McKinney Islamic Association, clearing the way for a 5.57-acre development along Virginia Parkway despite strong opposition from a large crowd of residents.
The proposed complex would include a prayer hall, gymnasium, classrooms, and community spaces. Council members described the vote as largely procedural, focused on zoning and site-plan compliance rather than the broader cultural and religious concerns raised by speakers.
The meeting stretched more than five hours as residents voiced alarm over what they termed “political Islam.” Several cited warnings from U.S. Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) regarding issues such as grooming gangs in the United Kingdom and reported cases in Texas involving child marriage and honor killings. A Christian Iranian refugee recounted his experiences living under Sharia law, drawing sustained applause from much of the audience.
Supporters of the project emphasized constitutional protections for religious freedom and argued that the application met all applicable zoning and land-use requirements. They urged the council to judge the proposal on its technical merits rather than the religious identity of the applicants.
The decision left the community sharply divided. McKinney, like many fast-growing North Texas suburbs, continues to experience rapid demographic and development changes that have heightened local debates over land use, cultural integration, and community character.
Council approval allows the McKinney Islamic Association to move forward with the project, subject to any remaining permitting and construction requirements.
