Lebron James commented on the Brittney Griner case and said that if he were the WNBA player, he would question coming back to the U.S.
Griner protested the national anthem and then was busted for carrying drugs in Russia. Griner pleaded guilty in the case, and she is facing ten years in a Russian prison.
Lebron said, “Now, how can she feel like America has her back? I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?”
Mike Huckabee responded, “Maybe ‘Mr. China made me rich!’ Lebron ought to relocate to the country that enriches him by slave labor. If you hate America, you don’t have to stay. LeBron James Says He’d Question Returning To America If He Were Brittney Griner.”
Representatives for Griner say they are hopeful she won’t receive a “severe sentence”.
“The guilty plea was her decision informed by discussion with her legal defense team in Russia,” Griner’s legal team said. “Brittney sets an example of being brave. She decided to take full responsibility for her actions as she knows that she is a role model for many people.”
“Considering the nature of her case, the insignificant amount of the substance and BG’s personality and history of positive contributions to global and Russian sport, the defense hopes that the plea will be considered by the court as a mitigating factor and there will be no severe sentence,” the reps said.
Enter stage left, Al Sharpton. For some reason, he will be heading to Russia.
“It’s my intention to be in Russia next week. And I hope the White House will help to make it possible for me to do a clergy visit to let her know of the support and to let her know that her family and everyone is concerned about her and pray with her.”
“And to bring a direct message back to this president from her and to hear from her.”
“And you must remember as her wife has told me, she’s in a prison where most of the people can’t even talk English.”
“She can’t even communicate with the people that run the prison.”
“She’s in a Russian jail.”
“This is atrocious at best.”
“Is she being used as some political tool for Putin? We don’t know. Which is why we want to go.”
Griner wrote a letter to President Biden:
“As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I might be here forever,” Griner wrote. “I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home.”
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden had read Griner’s letter and said, “This is very personal to him.”
