Does anyone think that Nancy Pelosi cares what some Cardinals or Bishops of the Catholic Church have to say about her receiving the Sacrament of Communion? It is hard to believe the Speaker of the House cares about anything other than political power.
Communion is the part of the Catholic Mass whereby parishioners receive the Eucharist which represents the body of Christ. Holy Communion is the source of all Christian life because when we receive Holy Communion, we are receiving Jesus Himself into our bodies.
It is hard to believe the most ruthless politician in the American government goes up to receive Communion every Sunday at Mass. She openly rejects the Catholic Church’s teachings on abortion, marriage, and sexuality because of her political beliefs so why would she care about communion?
Earlier this year, Pelosi’s Archbishop excluded her from Communion in his diocese. “We must never lose sight of this fact: In the last 50 years, in the United States alone, 66,000,000 babies have been murdered in their mothers’ wombs,” Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone said in a statement.
Cordileone wrote to Pelosi, saying she should not appear or present herself for Holy Communion during Mass and that no priests will give her communion if she tries, per a report.
Several conservative members of the clergy followed Cordileone in his stance on Pelosi and other people who believe in the right to an abortion. The stance has ignited an intense discussion within the Catholic Church and whether or not someone can declare a person unworthy of receiving the Eucharist.
“When the Eucharist is thought of as a prize, there seem to be winners and losers; there are some who quite comfortably think of themselves as worthy, while judging others to be unworthy,” Bishop Kevin Doran said.
The Speaker of the House enflamed the discussion when she recently continued her political circus show at the Vatican. She received Holy Communion on June 29 at a papal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. The pope was in attendance but did not give out Communion.
A search of emails would most assuredly reveal some form of communication sent to the Vatican from Speaker Pelosi’s administration demanding she receives the Eucharist during her trip to the Holy See. The facade would make Cordileone look bad pretty in the eyes of Catholics throughout the nation.
Seeing as the Vatican was well aware of the Speaker’s presence at the mass, why didn’t Pope Francis give the Eucharist? Arguably, the most powerful woman on the planet is taking Communion and the highest ranking member of the Catholic Church declined to deliver the host to her.
One can argue the Vatican took the easy out and had another Clergyman give the Speaker Communion. There is some truth to that. However, why would the Pope insert himself into American politics if he didn’t need to?
Pelosi should not view the Vatican mass as a win. She should view it as a slight to her power. She has relied on Bishop Doran’s words to support her argument but Doran adds to his statement.
Bishop Doran believes there comes a time when someone “cannot honestly accept the invitation to come to Holy Communion, because he or she has done something gravely wrong with full knowledge and full consent. It is the responsibility of each woman or man, to follow his or her well-formed conscience.”
Perhaps Pelosi continues to receive Communion to seek redemption and forgiveness. After all, when a person takes Communion, they are seeking forgiveness. Although, it is not forgiveness of serious sin. To do that, one has to go to Confession.
If Nancy Pelosi thinks the American people can’t see through her act, she is not as smart as she thinks. Nobody will argue she is a powerful politician. If she took her Catholic beliefs seriously, she would respect Archbishop Cordileone and seek guidance and forgiveness to continue her faith.
