Tension Within The Democratic Party As Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Condemns President Joe Biden For Silence Over Airstrikes On Somalia; Attacking Iraq-Syria Border

A perversely amusing fraction has erupted as known antisemite, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN), strongly criticized President Biden’s decision to airstrike Somalia. An airstrike, the Pentagon maintains, was launched in order to target suspected members of known. terrorist organization, al-Shabab, which has an active presence, not just in Somalia, but in Kenya and Yemen as well.

Before someone could even think to ask her what her issue was with targeting members of a known terrorist organization, Omar added that the President still needs to answer for his stagnant response in delivering previously promised reparations to the families of civilians that have been killed by American airstrikes.

The airstrike took place in Galkayo, the capital of the North Central mudug region of Somalia, elicited a letter from Omar to Biden, in which she criticized the President for rejecting multiple request from U.S. Africa Command, or AFRICOM, to strike al-Shabab targets. It was concluded that the airstrike, which occurred Tuesday, was conducted without the White House’s knowledge and that under the “collective self-defense” clause, AFRICOM could order the strike independent of the Administration.

In her letter, Omar said that, “As you know,” she wrote in the letter, “‘collective self-defense’ is a term with variable meanings in national and international law, and especially in the context of your ongoing review of airstrike authorities, its use merits further explanation in this case. This is also an important and timely matter since it seems suggestive of your Administration’s broader approach to airstrikes in Somalia”.”

Omar has previously condemned Biden for ordering similar airstrikes on the Iraq-Syria border in late June of this year. Those strikes, which led to the deaths of seven fighters, took place one day before Isreal’s new President, Isaac Herzog, was scheduled to meet with Biden at the White House.

There were three airstrikes conducted at the Iraq-Syria border; two of which landed in Syria and one of which, landed in Iraq. In response to this, Omar tweeted out that “This constant cycle of violence and retribution is a failed policy and will not make us any safer. Congress has authority over War Powers and should be consulted before any escalation“.
