One of the most lonely vocations in modern Western life is driving a massive truck across North America’s primarily arid regions. As a result, the anti-vaccination mandate protest in Canada initiated by these modern-day cowboys is worth watching. These are individuals who understand what it signifies to be liberated. It has consumed their entire existence. The scorn displayed to these truckers by their government and many in the media characterizes the reaction to the protest. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has mocked the plan and appears to have fled the city as massive rigs encircle it.
Politicians like Trudeau and many other leftists in Canada and the United States aren’t too concerned with COVID. It’s the idea that some people, particularly those who work for a living and aren’t reliant on handouts, have the audacity not just to disagree with them, but also to dismiss them. For metropolitan dwellers with office and service jobs, pandemic restrictions and rules abound. With a stroke of the governor’s pen, they can and have been crushed. However, the dwellers of the broad road, without whom our modern miracle of living would come to a screeching halt, are not so easily controlled.
The Elite is careless with how things are carried out. Toilets flush because plumbers work, houses are built because carpenters work, and store shelves are filled (or used to be) because truckers work. The better sorts of people, with their degrees and widely accepted points of view, are immune from all of this. The Canadian truck protest, on the other hand, indicates that this is a two-way street. Truckers have the same right to dismiss elites as elites have to dismiss truckers. The main difference is that the elites make nothing more than noise.
The very influencers and media sources that have spent the last two years preaching in favor of lockdowns have reached a “now it can be spoken” moment. Recently, the New York Times and The Atlantic published pieces stating that children should not wear masks to school. The fact that lockdowns have resulted in embarrassingly low poll numbers for the elite’s favorite party is one explanation for this, but there’s more to it. Ordinary people, those who do things and keep society going, are no longer required to listen to the purportedly powerful.
