Trump-Backed Candidates Dominate Kentucky GOP Primaries, Ousting Rep. Thomas Massie in Stunning Upset

Louisville, Ky. – In a decisive victory for President Donald Trump’s influence within the Republican Party, Trump-endorsed candidates swept key races in Kentucky’s GOP primaries on Tuesday, signaling strong voter alignment with the party’s populist wing.

U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, backed by Trump, cruised to the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, capturing approximately 60% of the vote against Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Barr will now face Democrat Charles Booker in the November general election for the seat.

The night’s biggest headline, however, came in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, where political newcomer and Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein defeated seven-term incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie. Gallrein secured 54.9% of the vote to Massie’s 45.1%, according to final results. The race shattered spending records for a House primary, with more than $30 million poured into advertising—largely fueled by Trump allies and pro-Israel groups targeting Massie’s libertarian-leaning voting record and consistent criticism of foreign aid.

Massie, known for his staunch opposition to unchecked foreign spending and his independent streak within the GOP, conceded the race but struck a defiant tone. In a statement following the loss, the congressman vowed to continue advocating for his principles during his remaining seven months in office. He praised the “young patriot voters” who supported his movement, calling them the future of a liberty-focused Republican Party.

“While this chapter closes, our fight for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and America First policies without exception is far from over,” Massie said.

The results underscore Trump’s enduring grip on the Republican base in Kentucky and come as a significant rebuke to more libertarian and isolationist voices within the party. Gallrein, a political outsider with a military background, framed his campaign as a fresh conservative alternative committed to strong national defense and alignment with Trump’s agenda.

Political analysts suggest the massive outside spending, combined with national Republican efforts to consolidate support behind Trump-aligned candidates, proved decisive against Massie, who had built a reputation as one of the most consistent fiscal hawks and foreign policy skeptics in Congress.

With these primary victories, Kentucky Republicans appear unified heading into the fall elections, setting the stage for what is expected to be a competitive Senate race between Barr and Booker.
