MEMPHIS, Tenn. — President Donald Trump joined top law enforcement and military officials at the Memphis Air National Guard Base on Tuesday to highlight dramatic public safety gains under the Safe Task Force, announcing a 43% drop in overall crime, a 35% reduction in homicides, and more than 7,700 arrests since January.
Flanked by Attorney General Pam Bondi, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, FBI Director Kash Patel, and senior adviser Stephen Miller, Trump praised the task force’s rapid results in the city, as well as similar operations in New Orleans and along the southern border.
“These numbers are incredible,” Trump told the assembled service members and law enforcement leaders. “Memphis is safer, families are safer, and we’re just getting started.”
During the event, Hegseth signed a directive granting National Guard members performing domestic security missions the same full active-duty pay and comprehensive medical benefits as their regular counterparts. The policy applies immediately to units deployed in Memphis, New Orleans, and border operations.
The announcement drew sustained applause from Guard personnel, who have been working extended shifts in high-crime areas under previous part-time compensation structures.

A brief moment during the event drew partisan attention after a short video clip circulated online showing Trump appearing to briefly close his eyes while seated. Critics quickly labeled the incident “Sleepy Don,” reviving an old nickname. Trump supporters dismissed the mockery, describing it as a momentary pause after what they called a packed schedule of travel and meetings.
Later in the day, Trump made an unannounced stop at Elvis Presley’s Graceland, where he toured the legendary home as a longtime fan. Staff at the site confirmed the president spent nearly an hour viewing exhibits and paying respects at the singer’s gravesite.
The Safe Task Force, launched earlier this year, has focused on deploying federal, state, and local resources into violent crime hotspots. Officials said the Memphis results mirror similar early declines reported in other targeted cities.
No further details on the next phase of the task force were released at the event.
